枯樹生華
In Japanese culture, the pine tree is known to represent longevity, good fortune and steadfastness. It is commonly linked with virtue and long life, even immortality. The pine tree is iconic of the Japanese New Year, as a symbol of rebirth, renewal, and a bright (hopeful) future. In this short documentary I sit down with Naoto Odashima, a Japanese Luthier (Guitar Maker) to learn more about how an infected Long Horn Beetle is killing this sacred and symbolic tree, What the local Government of Iwate is doing to attempt to stop the extinction and how Naoto is transforming dead Pine into high caliber instruments. 枯樹生華 “Ko Jyu Say Ka”. Translated directly into English means “Flowers bloom on dead tree.” 枯樹 ”Ko Jyu” means dead tree. 生華 “Say Ka” means flowers bloom. “Ko Jyu Say Ka” are old Japanese words. “Ko Jyu Say Ka” means finding a way out of despair. Another meaning is “conveying the utmost sincerity."
